Our HIMSS13 Public Policy sessions got a big boost this week when Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner confirmed she will be speaking on March 6th in New Orleans! Ms. Tavenner is the second CMS Administrator in recent years to travel to a HIMSS Conference to engage with our participants and confirm the importance of health IT to the CMS mission to transform healthcare delivery in the U.S. Just this week, Ms. Tavenner was nominated by President Barack Obama to be Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Amid the public debate on healthcare reform deadlines and care and payment models, I anticipate Ms. Tavenner will have a great deal to say about the critical impact 2013 will have on setting the IT goals for healthcare transformation and Obamacare. If we’re going to achieve a successful transition to a more affordable and cost effective healthcare system, we can expect Ms. Tavenner to clearly articulate how the CMS initiatives on Accountable Care Organizations, Health Insurance Marketplaces, Administrative Simplification, and the Meaningful Use Incentive Program intend to use health IT to demonstrate real cost containment and quality improvement.
Tavenner brings a wealth of experience on the intersection of innovation, care delivery, and public policy from her background in nursing health plan administration and state and federal government. Prior to assuming her CMS leadership role, Ms. Tavenner served for four years as the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources. Before entering government service, she spent 25 years working for the Hospital Corporation of American (HCA). She began her healthcare career as a nurse in Richmond, VA.
In addition to the View from the CMS Administrator session, CMS will have a series of education sessions, a booth on the exhibition floor (Hall D), and a town hall meeting at HIMSS13. All of the venues will provide excellent opportunities for you to engage with CMS officials at HIMSS13. Sessions supported by CMS and other federal agencies are listed here.
We have one month to go before Ms. Tavenner’s speech at HIMSS13. What topics do you think she should be addressing at HIMSS13? If given the chance, what would you like to ask her?
